Waves 4

At what frequency will a stretched string vibrate?

Two students stretch an elastic string between them doubling its length from unstretched. They pluck it in such a way as to play the 2nd Harmonic, this has a frequency of 50 Hz. They then stretch the string so that it is twice as long again and play the first harmonic.

Given that the velocity of the wave in a string is √(T/μ) and making the assumption that the string obeys hookes law. calculate the new frequency

T = tension
μ = mass per unit length
